Professor Richard Gilbertson is Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre at Cambridge University, and has dedicated his career to understanding more about childhood brain tumours.
His research has helped to identify that there are different types of medulloblastoma and ependymoma – two of the most common kind of childhood brain tumour. His work showed these types are completely different from the start – they begin from different cells in the brain and have different faults in their DNA. He and his team are using this knowledge to search for new drugs that target the different DNA mistakes in each type of medulloblastoma and ependymoma.
