BioRN News July 2024
View this email in your browser
Dear *|FNAME|* *|LNAME|*,

Two last things to do before OOO for the summer break:
  1. Read the newsletter and learn about the BioRN activities in July
  2. Register today for BioRN Annual Conference, 9 October 2024
In July, we had numerous opportunities to present BioRN with its strong network:
Julia Schaft followed the invitation of the BioM Cluster to contribute to the panel on Translation Science at the BayOConnct Conference, showcasing BioRNs lightshouse projects Biolabs and beLab 2122 and contributing to the discussion about new concepts to financing successful life science startups.

BioRN supported the Curious Future Insight Conference as a partner and this year in particular the startup fair.
Together with our two members Deep LS and PlantShield, who received the opportunity to exhibit for free, we represented the innovative strength of Life Science Region Rhine-Neckar. The increase in visibility and the acquisition of new contacts made the event a success for both companies.

The BioRN HR Community met for a fruitful workshop on the topic of “Onboarding foreign skilled workers - compliance with legal requirements for employment".  Important forms and platforms have been shared that help with the process. Even better: the community now has a contact person who is available to answer queries quickly and unbureaucratically.

The last M2M Member to Member session before summer break provided great insights into the products and services of Polysciences and it´s expertise in the fields of cell- and gentherapy as well as nano-and microparticles.
Watch the video on demand.

This year, we enriched the presentation of the EY Biotech Report with a panel discussion with guests from Palatina Business Angels e.V., Sciomics and the Life Science Accelerator BW. The exciting discussion showed to what extent AI has arrived in the everyday life of German biotech companies and how decisive the shift in the legal framework will be for the competitiveness of Germany as a biotechnology hub.

Congratulations to 40 years Heidelberg Technology Park: The celebration ceremony at the Business Development Center (BDC) Heidelberg with esteemed guests from politics, business, and academia reflected on the journey since 1984 and discussed future prospects. Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung IPA – one of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s largest institutes – was founded in 1959 and employs nearly 1200 workers. The focus of their research and development work is on organizational and technological issues related to the manufacturing industry including the following sectors: automotive, machinery & equipment, electronics & microsystems, energy, medical engineering & biotechnology, and the process industry. The department »Clinical Health Technologies« at Fraunhofer IPA stands for the digitization of central areas of our society: medicine and biotechnology.

Their claim is to be a driver of innovation and to make central contributions to the medical care of the future. To this end, Fraunhofer IPA forms resilient networks and are pioneers in their fields. As part of CUBEX41 (Mannheim Centre for Foundations and Competencies in Medical Technology) they are in direct contact with the University Medical Center Mannheim and top-class start-ups. They use this environment to develop new ideas, to push them forward and to bring them directly into the clinic - whether within the framework of an informal exchange or a study. This makes them a unique partner of clinics and industry in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and beyond.
PHABIOC GmbH develops innovative tools, microplates, and analyzers for small scale and high-throughput screenings in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry. Their products offer advanced analytical capabilities and simplify complex laboratory challenges for their customers.

With increasingly complex tasks and issues in the development of new drugs, scientists and engineers are facing growing challenges. Specificity, efficiency, and structural analysis are crucial for approval. Time constraints and societal pressure to minimize animal testing contribute to the complexity.

PHABIOC aims to solve these problems. To address these challenges, PHABIOC has developed two product brands: "PermeaPad" and "SpecPlate":
PermeaPad is a patented technology of artificial membranes where they strive to simulate as many barriers of the human body as possible to predict the uptake of drugs in the body in the laboratory without animal or cell experiments.
SpecPlate, on the other hand, is a special UV plate that measures concentrations of drugs more reliably and quickly in an automated high-throughput setting than the current gold standard.
This platform offers their customers an improved ability to efficiently analyze drug concentrations via UV/Vis spectroscopy.
