Heidelberg researcher receives prestigious Paul Ehrlich Young Scientist Award for brain tumor research

Brain tumors can hijack the nervous system, tap into its activation signals, and thereby accelerate their growth. For these groundbreaking discoveries regarding the role of the nervous system in the growth of brain tumors, the Paul Ehrlich Foundation honored Dr. Dr. Varun Venkataramani, a neuroscientist at Heidelberg University’s Faculty of Medicine and a neuro-oncologist at the Department of Neurology at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD), with the 2026 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Young Scientist Award. The award was presented to him by the Chairman of the Foundation Board on March 14, 2026, at Frankfurt’s Paulskirche.

Greater Precision and Safety in Neurosurgical Procedures

A new surgical system at the Department of Neurosurgery at Heidelberg University Hospital helps surgeons precisely plan procedures on the brain, spine, and skull base, monitor them during surgery, and perform them with millimeter precision. The “Robotic Surgery Suite,” which cost approximately 1.6 million euros, combines live imaging, digital navigation, and robotic assistance directly in […]

Mitochondrial Protein Complexes: A Single Amino Acid Can Jeopardize Their Stability

Mitochondrial Protein Complexes: A Single Amino Acid Can Jeopardize Their Stability

Scientists from Heidelberg and Freiburg identify the mechanism by which proteins assemble into stable complexes in mitochondria A tiny processing step has far-reaching consequences for mitochondrial function: The removal of a single amino acid determines whether new proteins can assemble into stable complexes within these cellular powerhouses. This process is carried out by a specific […]
