Strengthening the Region as a Hub for Technology and Research

Strengthening the Region as a Hub for Technology and Research

Press release of the L-Bank Baden-Württemberg, 28 September 2026

With the official opening of the building at Markwiesenstraße 53 in Reutlingen, the Tübingen-Reutlingen Technology Park continues its success story. Multifunctional spaces for offices, workshops, and laboratories have been created for young technology-based companies and scientific institutions. In the new NMI expansion building at Markwiesenstraße 53-1, state-of-the-art and specialized laboratories for application-oriented research are being set up.

Construction took just under two years, and TTR GmbH invested approximately 20 million euros in its new building. The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs was among the entities involved in the construction of the new NMI building. For Minister of Economic Affairs Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, this is an important investment in the future: “We are making targeted investments in modern research infrastructure and promoting our state’s innovation and competitiveness. After all, anyone who wants to secure Baden-Württemberg’s position as a leading technology and business hub must lay the groundwork today for the innovations of tomorrow.”

Young companies can now rent space and set up operations in the new TTR building in Reutlingen. For L-Bank board member Johannes Heinloth, the technology park offers excellent conditions for the further development of young companies and their products: “Technology parks provide their tenants with office space, high-tech specialized areas, and laboratories, as well as infrastructure benefits such as a daycare center and a cafeteria. However, what’s crucial is the proximity to scientific institutes, universities, and renowned research institutions. In technology parks, efficient collaboration develops quickly, benefiting all partners involved.”

The second building, located at Markwiesenstraße 53-1, officially became the property of the NMI in mid-September when the keys were handed over. State-of-the-art laboratories for applied research are being built at 53-1. Minister of Economic Affairs Hoffmeister-Kraut: “Innovation arises where excellent research meets entrepreneurial application. The NMI has embodied precisely this connection for many years. With the new laboratory building, we are creating modern conditions for this and strengthening the NMI as an effective partner for businesses and the scientific community.”

NMI Director and Chair of the Board Prof. Dr. Katja Schenke-Layland: “This new building enables us to optimize our research capabilities in a sustainable manner. The laboratory infrastructure is precisely tailored to the requirements of the NMI’s research – including specialized climate control systems and integrated safety concepts. Thanks to the support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Crafts, and Tourism, we are elevating our research to the highest international standards.”

For Jens Wetzel, Managing Director of the Tübingen-Reutlingen Technology Park, the partnership with the NMI is a stroke of luck: “We are very pleased that we were able to successfully complete the new building together with the NMI and wish the team much inspiration and success in their new facilities. With our multifunctional and flexible new building, we are strengthening the future viability of our Reutlingen location and regional value creation – another important milestone for us.”

Reutlingen Mayor Thomas Keck also views the completion of the new building and the NMI’s move into it as a significant step forward for the city and the region: “We are pleased that TTR continues to invest, especially in these economically challenging times. The new building was made possible by the adjacent parking garage, which allowed for the elimination of ground-level parking spaces. This is a successful example of the excellent and space-efficient collaboration between Reutlingen and Kusterdingen. The new expansion space for the NMI strengthens a central institution of our science and technology hub. At the same time, it creates space for technology-oriented companies and thus for further innovations and sustainable jobs.”

The Tübingen-Reutlingen Technology Park (TTR) was founded back in 2001. Approximately 60 companies are based there, representing an occupancy rate of nearly 100 percent. About 1,750 people currently work in the buildings constructed by the TTR. The technological focus is on biotechnology, nanotechnology, sensor technology, and AI.

Background

The L-Bank’s technology parks, located in Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Tübingen-Reutlingen, promote the transfer of knowledge and technology from academia to industry. The parks are therefore situated near universities and research institutions and focus on different areas depending on the region’s strengths.

With the new MW-53 building, TTR GmbH is pursuing a multifunctional building concept. From offices and electrical engineering workshops to biotechnology laboratories and cleanrooms, all requirements can be accommodated in every space. The building is designed to be sustainable and energy-efficient.

Mitochondrial Protein Complexes: A Single Amino Acid Can Jeopardize Their Stability

Scientists from Heidelberg and Freiburg identify the mechanism by which proteins assemble into stable complexes in mitochondria A tiny processing step has far-reaching consequences for mitochondrial function: The removal of a single amino acid determines whether new proteins can assemble into stable complexes within these cellular powerhouses. This process is carried out by a specific […]
