Universität Heidelberg: Successful Placement in Times Higher Education Rankings

Ruperto Carola is ranked among the world’s “Top 50” and one of the top three universities in Germany

Heidelberg University is one of the top three universities in Germany, ranking third in the 2025/2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which have just been published. In 49th position internationally, it is among the world’s “Top 50” as in the previous year – one of only three German universities to earn that distinction. In the Europe-wide comparison, Ruperto Carola is placing 13th in the THE Rankings.

In Germany, Heidelberg University is among the “Top 50” universities in the world, along with the two universities in Munich. Taking first place at the national level, Technical University of Munich ranks 27th internationally. LMU Munich, second in Germany, is in 34th position in the global comparison. Five other German universities are among the “Top 100” universities, ranked 89th, 91st, 92nd (shared) and 98th.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, published on 9 October 2025, are based on a total of 18 different indicators. They are grouped into five areas of performance. These are, above all, teaching (learning environment), research environment and research quality. Other areas analyzed include aspects of internationalization and industry. This year’s THE Rankings feature 2,191 institutions from 115 countries/regions.
